Since their foundation, each of the schools of political studies has participated in courses organized in Strasbourg, focusing mainly on the European institutions.
In 2006, in order to increase the profile/visibility of the programme and forge stronger ties between participants from the various schools, the closing seminars were merged for the first time into a single grand event, the Summer University for Democracy, which took place from 10 to 14 July and was organised in partnership with the European Public Administration Centre (PEAP). This event brought together about 500 participants from 15 countries at Palace of Europe. The programme included plenary sessions; workshops and study visits. These activities aimed to support a reflection shared on common issues, and creates bilateral and regional spaces of dialogue. It also enables them to listen to European and international personalities and to meet many experts from throughout Europe and beyond.
Each University is dedicated to a particular topic: in 2006, challenges to democracy; in 2007, the future of the European project. The University illustrates this topic in a certain number of events of different natures: plenary sessions gathering all of the participants, the thematic conferences gathering from 2 to 4 schools of political studies, workshops addressing only one school and privileging participative methods, moments intended for bilateral or regional programmes. In addition, visits of the European Court of Human Rights are foreseen.
Since 2006, The Summer University for Democracy takes part in the curricula of the schools of politics. It is organized mainly the first week of July. The topic of the Summer University for 2008 is “Governance, Power and Democracy”.
